Caltex Fuel Your School Helps Davao Students

DAVAO CITY, Philippines, February 2, 2017 — Keeping students actively engaged can be challenging, particularly for educators teaching Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. Adopting the simple strategy of using visual stimuli can do wonders in boosting attention spans and promoting class participation, according to several studies. This is further strengthened by the significantly higher class engagement in 30 Davao City public high schools that recently received visual equipment through the Caltex Fuel Your School (FYS) program.

The majority of the almost 50,000 students who benefited from Caltex’s donation, which includes laptops, projectors, pocket Wi-Fi devices, calculators and lab tools, reportedly showed marked increase in class participation and longer attention spans. This has resulted in better overall academic performance, with beneficiary schools reporting dramatic improvements in students’ grades at the end of the second quarter of the current school year.

“By leveraging videos such as animations of the central nervous system, Mintal Comprehensive High School has elevated the classroom experience to a whole new level. Our students are actively asking questions out of sheer excitement and curiosity, and this has spurred the dramatic increase in all of our students’ grades,” said Rose Nucum, Mintal Comprehensive High School teacher.

Through Caltex FYS, educators have started to adopt 21st century teaching methods in Davao public schools. Students are quickly absorbing information through online learning tools, eliminating the need for Manila papers and DIY diagrams, which cost teachers time and money.

“Caltex FYS paved the way for our ordinary learners to learn extraordinarily. The FYS materials and equipment motivated our pupils to learn more effectively and outperform expectations. At least 63 percent of our students who are using the science laboratory have shown grade improvements since benefitting from Caltex FYS,” said Tiffanie Arana, teacher with the F. Bangoy National HS.

“Thanks to Caltex FYS, 85 percent of our students have not only their improved grades but improved their skills and creativity as well. It has been a big help to us teachers by allowing us to convey abstract and complex science concepts more easily through the use of digital tools,” said Brady Nave, a Davao City National HS teacher.

Last June, Caltex FYS donated P1 for every one-liter purchase of Caltex with Techron or Delo Sports diesel engine oil from any of the 22 Caltex stations or 160 lubricant business partners in Davao City. Caltex FYS successfully raised P3 million, which was used to purchase learning equipment requested by 200 STEM teachers in 30 Davao public high schools.

The students played a vital role in raising awareness and fuel-ups for the program. Aside from tapping social media, they created jingles, cheers and homemade FYS flyers throughout Davao to inform local communities about the advocacy.

“Since its Philippine launch in 2015, Caltex Fuel Your School has funded more than 58 classroom projects in 67 Manila and Davao schools and has impacted about 153,000 public high school students. Following its highly successful run for the last two years, we hope to continue bringing Caltex Fuel Your School to more regions to spur STEM learning in secondary schools across the Philippines,” said Peter Morris, country chairman of Chevron Philippines Inc. (CPI), marketer of the Caltex brand of fuels and lubricants.
