Grab Celebrates One Year of GrabTrike in Zamboanga, Expands “Grab Asenso: A Digital Diskarte Program”

Grab marked the first anniversary of GrabTrike in Zamboanga by expanding its flagship public-private initiative, “Grab Asenso: A Digital Diskarte Program”, underscoring the importance of digital tools and upskilling in modernizing one of the city’s most vital transport sectors. Supported by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and partner local government units, the program aims to build an inclusive digital economy by equipping MSMEs and traditional transport providers with the tools and skills they need to thrive in today’s connected marketplace. In just one year, GrabTrike has doubled the daily completed rides and earnings of its most active drivers, serving as a powerful “dagdag kita” for Zamboanga’s tricycle communities.

As part of the anniversary celebration, Grab distributed brand-new smartphones to qualified tricycle drivers — including those who had long been waiting to join GrabTrike but lacked a device, as well as pioneering drivers whose phones were already worn out. The event also featured an Asenso Learning Session, covering modules on road safety, passenger handling, and the use of in-app safety features such as Share Your Ride, Trip Monitoring, and the Emergency SOSbutton. DICT Region IX Director Cheryl Ortega commended the effort, framing it as aligned with the national goal of creating eight million digital jobs. “Sa digital bayanihan, walang Pilipino ang maiiwan sa Bagong Pilipinas,” she said, emphasizing DICT’s commitment to empowering drivers and partners in the digital economy.

Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso welcomed GrabTrike’s first-year milestone, noting that the platform promotes accountability, strengthens safety and security, and builds trust between drivers, government, and commuters. GrabTrike pioneer Mark Anthony Balasabas reported that app-based bookings doubled his trips, while TODA leader Hermogenes Awid highlighted how GrabTrike not only increases income but also ensures safer and more reliable service for the public. Grab continues to expand its partnerships with local TODAs, extending its service reach across key areas including Zamboanga International Airport, the city center, and nearby barangays, cementing GrabTrike as a crucial part of Zamboanga’s evolving transport network.
