Take Yamaha’s best-selling AT motorcycle in the local market and put it on steroids. What do we get? A scooter that sells as fast as it accelerates. Laurnched more than a year ago, the Mio Aerox is still one of the most sought after model in the Japanese firm’s stable. The demand for it was great that there was a waiting list for customers aspiring to have an Aerox in their garage. The demand for units was so high, in fact, that Yamaha had to activate one of their specially designed display units to let us have a little understanding on what the fuss is all about.

The Mio Aerox is propelled by a 155 cc, liquid-cooled 4-valve single which produces 11.1 kw of power and 13.8 nm of torque. Staying true to its slogan, the Aerox easily kept me ahead of the traffic from stoplights and beyond. Lead with speed, indeed. This is achieved via Yamaha’s Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) technology that automatically adjusts the fuel intake at certain RPMs. The result is more torque at lower speeds and more power at higher speeds. To refer to the Aerox as a “sporty scooter” would be putting it mildly. The term “automatic sportbike” would be more befitting. It has the styling to match the performance. From the aggressive looking headlight to the nicely-sculpted rear end. The fat 14-inch tubeless tires complete the overall look. Yet, you won’t be complaining about a sore back on this one.

The Aerox allows a neutral riding stance and, to my surprise, a plush ride as well. I was expecting a bone-jarring riding experience often associated with performance-oriented machines. This muscular beast is also deceptively light, tipping the scales at only 116 kilograms. I would say it is almost as flickable as its smaller siblings in the Mio line-up. Yamaha might have suspected that most Aerox owners would probably decide against installing a rear top box so they threw in a 25-liter underseat storage space which could easily fit a full face helmet with room to spare…and you can conveniently access it via the switch beside the ignition keyhole. At P 99,800, the Mio Aerox offers one the best values in the market. You already get fuel injection system, full LED lighting and a large digital instrument panel that has trip computer. I rode the Aerox like a hooligan and still I was able to achieve 32 kilometers to a liter.

Yamaha has recently launched the S version of the Mio Aerox and at price tag of P 122,900 you get anti-lock brakes (ABS), which kind of contradicts its new slogan “Beyond Unstoppable” (excuse the pun). Yamaha also added other class-leading features to justify the added premium. There is the Start-Stop System which automatically shuts off the engine when idling in traffic or at red lights.

The Mio Aerox S also now comes with a Smart Key System, which enables the rider to start the engine without the use of a key. It is not only convenient but it will deter most motorcycle thieves as well. As of this writing, Yamaha is already accepting reservations for the S variant after just releasing the first batch of units the new proud owners.
