MANILA, Philippines — Shell has unveiled its groundbreaking Triple 10 Challenge Concept Car, a proof-of-concept battery electric vehicle (EV) designed to inspire a new generation of more efficient, affordable, and sustainable electric mobility. Co-engineered with leading automotive technology partners, the compact mass-market EV showcases an innovative thermal management system that enables faster charging, greater energy efficiency, and lower lifecycle carbon emissions without relying on larger battery packs.
At the heart of the concept are Shell’s ambitious “Triple 10” targets: a sub-10-minute charging time, 10 km/kWh energy efficiency, and an estimated 10-tonne lifecycle CO₂e footprint. The vehicle successfully charges from 10% to 80% in just 9 minutes and 54 seconds using a standard 175kW charger, while achieving over 30% greater energy efficiency than many current-generation EVs. By utilizing Shell Recharge thermal fluid and an innovative single-circuit immersive cooling system, the concept vehicle also delivers nearly 90% more driving range per minute of chargingcompared to typical battery electric vehicles using the same charging infrastructure.
According to Cara Tredget, Vice President for Mobility & Lubricants Technology at Shell, the project demonstrates how advanced thermal fluid technology can unlock significant improvements in EV performance. “With the Triple 10 Challenge concept car, we have unlocked the potential for faster charging, lighter systems and improved lifecycle efficiency by using our advanced thermal fluids,” she said. The immersive cooling technology replaces conventional water-glycol cooling systems, enabling direct cooling of the battery, electric motor, and power electronics while reducing system complexity, battery weight, and overall vehicle costs by an estimated 25%.
Developed in collaboration with RML, Empel Systems, and HORIBA MIRA, the Triple 10 Challenge Concept Car highlights the potential of existing technologies to accelerate the adoption of next-generation EVs. Alongside the vehicle’s unveiling, Shell also announced the integration of its complete EV ecosystem—including charging, thermal fluids, and battery solutions—under the Shell Recharge brand, reinforcing the company’s commitment to delivering a seamless, end-to-end electric mobility experience for both business and consumer customers.
