Greener mobility solutions have always been part of Honda’s drive to engineer some of the cleanest and most efficient cars in the world. After all, Honda is aiming for carbon neutrality for all products and corporate activities by 2050, along with 100% electrification of vehicles by 2040. Aligned with this, Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI), looks forward to introducing an all-new model with e:HEVtechnology within 2023.
These are some of the ways we can reduce our impacts on the environment, as we are thoughtfully reminded in June which is the Philippine Environment Month. As such, here are five suggestions for car owners and drivers to be more eco-friendly every time (not just in June) and regardless of the car brand you have now or will have in the future:
Drive only when necessary and combine trips
Heavy traffic eats up a lot of fuel and time, so avoid congested routes and peak hours. Plan and combine small trips and errands. Also, consider carpooling or public transportation but please still observe safety protocols when you do these. For short trips and when safe, why not bike or walk.
Proper maintenance is key
Like the human body, a car’s engine is at its best when it’s healthy. That is why regular service is important when it comes to maintaining a car’s efficiency and performance. A healthy engine means the car runs at an optimized level, meaning less fuel consumption and emissions. Ensure regular oil, fluid, and filter changes. Honda prescribes only two periodic maintenance visits each year, every 6 months or 10,000 kilometers, whichever comes first at any authorized Honda Cars dealerships or service centers.
Be a smooth operator
Flooring the accelerator does no favors in saving fuel, and repeatedly slamming on the brakes is just as bad. One of the keys to efficient driving is smoothness and momentum, and jerky motions are a
no-no. It’s also unsafe to be driving aggressively around the city, it’s not worth the risk and the extra
fuel burned to save a few minutes on the road.
In this way, the Honda SENSING suite of driver-assist features, not only enhances safety and convenience but also contributes to better fuel efficiency. One notable example is the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) which helps ensure a safe following distance and stay within the speed limit. Additionally, the Low-Speed Follow (LSF) automatically decelerates a vehicle to a complete stop, then accelerates it back up to the set speed when traffic conditions allow. These features effectively minimize sudden braking, allowing for smoother acceleration and avoiding abrupt or aggressive movements that negatively impact fuel economy.
Tire pressures are important, too
Small adjustments in tire pressure make a huge difference. Underinflated tires can reduce fuel efficiency by up to 3%. On the other hand, over-inflated tires can reduce fuel efficiency by up to 1%. Not only that, handling and braking distances are affected, typically for the worse if the recommended pressures are not followed. Follow your vehicle’s recommended tire pressure which is usually found on your manual or the driver’s door post.
Choose fuel-efficient vehicles
Reducing environmental impact has a lot to do with the choice of vehicle. For those wanting to cut down on fuel consumption and costs, a fuel-efficient car is the way to go. Fuel-efficient cars, such as hybrids and models with lean-burn engines, produce fewer emissions. Lesser emissions mean a reduction in air pollution, and an improvement in air quality and health impacts.
Honda has a wide array of vehicles as eco-friendly options for motorists. Models such as the Brio, City, Civic, HR-V, CR-V, and the All-New BR-V recorded high fuel efficiency ratings in local conditions, as shown by tests performed in partnership with the Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP).
| Honda Brio 1.2 V CVT | 24.39 km/L |
| Honda City 1.5 RS CVT | 25.17 km/L |
| Honda City Hatchback 1.5 RS CVT | 25.00 km/L |
| Honda Civic RS Turbo CVT Honda SENSING | 21.43 km/L |
| Honda HR-V S CVT Honda SENSING | 29.66 km/L |
| All-New Honda BR-V 1.5 V CVT | 24.71 km/L |
| Honda CR-V SX Diesel 9AT AWD Honda SENSING | 23.96 km/L |
Honda is all set on its global targets for environmental performance and safety. These are 100% electrification of automobiles by 2040 and carbon neutrality for products and corporate activities by 2050. In the area of safety, Honda aims for zero collision fatalities from the use of all its products by 2050.
